What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is used to treat small spider veins in the upper and lower legs with a saline solution. The solution irritates the walls of the vessels and eventually your body absorbs them and disposes of it.
Depending on how many areas need to be treated will determine how many treatments you may need. Limited sun exposure Is preferred before and after having treatment for 3 months. It will take about 3 months for your body to completely rid itself of the veins that are being treated. Compression stockings are recommended post treatment to wear for 72 hours consistently. Walking as much as possible afterwards is great for circulation but pounding exercises such as aerobics and running are not recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
Your provider will use a fine needle to slowly insert a solution into the appropriate vein. The solution works by irritating the lining of the vein, causing it to swell shut and block the flow of blood.
How long does the treatment take?
A typical treatment session may last up to 30 minutes and will consist of microinjections. If there are many veins being treated, the procedure may take longer.
When will I see results?
Over 2-4 weeks, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades, eventually becoming virtually unnoticeable or invisible.
Does it hurt?
There is a little sting associated with each injection. The burning sensation lasts few seconds.
How quickly will I recover?
There is some mild pain and the injected site will appear bruised and swollen for a few days. After the first 2 days, most patients can resume to normal activities.
