What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic, irritating skin condition in which you have a persistent ruddiness, sometimes accompanied by bumps and thickening. It usually begins sometime after age 30 and progressively worsens as time goes by, especially if it goes untreated. In severe cases, your nose can accumulate excess tissue, swell, and acquire bumps. About 50% of rosacea cases also involve the eyes.

SYMPTOMS

Reddened skin and bloodshot eyes are common symptoms. You might also experience:

  • Burning, stinging skin
  • Larger-than-normal pores
  • Bumps on your eyelids
  • Compromised vision
  • Bulbous nose
  • Patches of dry, rough skin

Rosacea symptoms aren’t always present but often occur in response to triggers. You may have a flare-up that lasts for a few days or weeks and then fades, only to return.

Treatment

Seek treatment for rosacea because, without it, you’re more likely to experience more severe and frequent symptoms that can become permanent.

No cure for the condition exists, but your Atlantic Dermatology provider may prescribe medications that help tighten blood vessels, clear up bumps and redness, and kill bacteria on your skin. Other treatments include lasers to shrink enlarged blood vessels and dermabrasion to exfoliate the outer layer of your skin.

  • Between the ages of 30 and 50
  • Female

  • Prone to acne

Blood vessel issues, an abundance of a particular type of skin mites, or presence of H. pylori in your gut are possible reasons why you have rosacea.

How can I reduce the occurrence of my rosacea symptoms?

You can reduce the occurrence of your rosacea symptoms by avoiding common triggers, including:

  • Direct sunlight and extreme temperatures
  • Wind
